Prince Philip of Greece & Denmark was born in Corfu, in 1921. He is also related to the Royal Families of Prussia & Emperors of Russia.
Prince Philip's childhood was traumatic, albeit a Prince. He had to flee Greece in an orange crate due to revolution. His father abandoned the family & his mother suffered a mental breakdown and was forcibly insitutionalised (later diagnosed with schizophrenia).
He was bounced around relative to relative, country to country. As an adult, an interviewer once asked Philip what language he spoke at home. He replied: “What do you mean, ‘at home’?”
Prince Philip was educated in Scotland, Gordonstoun. He was known as Philip of Greece & was bullied due to having no surname.
When he was 16, his pregnant sister Cecile went into labour on a plane. Later on the same flight, the plane crashed, killing Cecile, her husband, their child & their newborn baby. A few months later, his uncle and guardian, George Mountbatten died suddendly of cancer.
At 18, Philip enrolled in the Royal Navy College at Dartmouth. This is where he would first encounter the then Princess Elizabeth. He won 2 prizez for being the best cadet.
Prince Philip's sisters were married into German aristocracy & to some Nazi's. He fought against his brothers-in-law. As simple Philip of Greece he became one of the youngest officers in the Royal Navy to be made First Lieutenant at the age of 21.

The aristocracy & establishment were unhappy with the courtship of Prince Philip & Elizabeth. He was sometimes only referred to as "The Hun" & faced xenephobia from the establishment due to his Greek & Danish heritage & being a Greek Orthodox.
Prince Philip had to renounce a lot in order to become married to Princess Elizabeth. He renounced all titles, his citizenships, his religion & country. He became a British subject & took his mother's family name Mountbatten.
Prince George VI gave him the title Duke of Edinburgh in 1947. He only became a Prince on behalf of Queen Elizabeth in 1957.
Together with Crown Prince Hassan of Jordan and Sir Evelyn Rothschild, The Duke of Edinburgh some years ago instituted the Inter-Faith Dialogue between the Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths. This group continues to meet regularly to discuss matters of common interest.
An interesting one❗️The islanders of Tanna, one of the islands in Vanuatu in the South West Pacific, worship the Duke of Edinburgh as a god. Vanuatu was formerly the Anglo-French Condominium of the New Hebrides, which Prince Philip visited in 1971.
When he married he had the equivalent of 12 pence in the bank, but Philip designed a bracelet as his wedding present for his bride. The stones came from a tiara owned by his mother. He also recycled the diamonds from the same tiara to make her engagement ring.
Elizabeth read about the benefits of having the father present for the birth& Philip "was actually holding his wife's hand as their youngest was born on March 10, 1964," thus becoming the first royal father, at least in modern history, to be present for the birth of his child.
His pet name for Queen Elizabeth is “mon petit chou.” A French phrase, which translates to his little cabbage.
During WWII his mother became a nun, hid Jewish families & worked in soup kitchens. She even used her deafness as an excuse to wave off the Gestapo. She was bestowed The Rightous Among Nations & buried in the Mount of Olives.
Since he founded the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme in 1956, more than four million young people from over 90 countries have taken part, testing their physical fitness and meeting community challenges.
The Duke used to use an LPG-powered taxi cab around London to attend engagements, often unrecognised.
Prince Philip has completed 22,219 solo engagements since 1952, these do not count the engagements in the Commonwealth etc with The Queen. He has made 4,632 speeches at meetings, conferences and receptions - an average of around eight speeches a month for 50 years.
