Coming back to Nigeria after years of living in Florida will be one of the most significant chapters if I get to write the story of my life or the struggles my parent went through to get us all into the United States with a tourist Visa in 2001 hoping to change Visa. The thing is
It used to be an easier road like that back then.
Things got difficult after the 9/11 attack, and they denied us.
My Dad was a hardworking man with amazing marketing skills.
My Mum cooks too.
They both got a job and I was working as a digital marketer for a start-up too.
Living as an illegal immigrant is not something anyone will ever wish for.
We were living in the shadow and wasn't under the radar of ICE.
We were hoping rules were going to change to make it legal or find a job that can sponsor us.
We found nothing.
We waited for years.
Nothing changed.
Trump came in and said everyone living without papers should be sent back home.
That was when reality strikes.
All we wanted to have was a better life.
Nigeria was going on a downward slope and no hope for it to get back up.
Seeing my parent in cuffs after appealing and labeled a criminal for being an illegal immigrant.
We were only given 45days to leave the country.
Nigeria wasn't home for us anymore because we had nothing in it.
I had to grow up very fast and mature at an early age.
My Dad only wanted a greener pasture for his family and just was desperate to have a proper life.
We came back to Nigeria without anything in it.
No house, no car nothing, and immediately we got in, we had already triggered the ten-years bar just because we overstayed.
Deportation had us in our throat.
We got to Lagos around 4 pm and lodged at a family house in GRA Ikeja.
It was a completely different life the country is even worse than we left it 18years ago.
All we were hoping for was to go out the next day and see how we can settle in.
We had no one, no government to help or had any relative to run to.
We were staying at Surulere before we left for the USA.
But the last time I checked on google map, it wasn't even looking familiar.
We spent a month and two weeks in the hotel before getting an apartment.
We started life again here. Combining the knowledge we had there to life here was a positive one.
Dad got a job as a Sales/Marketing Manager in a firm in Lagos.
Mum didn't have the luck to secure a job as a chef, but I got one into Multichoice Digital Marketing Team.
It wasn't rosy, but we found a balance.
It was a downward slope, and nothing we were used to, but we still find a way to make it out alive and strong.
It doesn't matter the situation you find yourself, how hard you fall always stand up again and get a balance.
