It is vital to make the domestic and international connections of brutal violence carried out by U.S. government via the police/military industrial complex. I will focus on AFRICOM, a U.S. gov. program that is focused on expanding control over the African continent. (THREAD)
United States Africa Command, AFRICOM is a full-spectrum combatant command and is responsible for all U.S. Department of Defense operations, exercises, and security cooperation on the African continent, its island nations, and surrounding waters.
Its' Mission: "With partners disrupts and neutralizes transnational threats, protects U.S. personnel and facilities, prevents and mitigates conflict, and builds African partner defense capability and capacity in order to promote regional security, stability, and prosperity."
The foundation of AFRICOM began under the Bush Administration. An overwhelming majority African countries resisted AFRICOM. On October 1, 2008, because of the backlash of African Leaders it was not headquartered on the Continent but in Stuttgart, Germany.
Vice Admiral Robert Moeller, first and former deputy of AFRICOM, declared in 2008, “Protecting the free flow of natural resources from Africa to the global market is one of AFRICOM’s guiding principles.” - @osazuae The Bush Administration = A War Criminal Regime
A few months after AFRICOM, President Barack Obama, is sworn in as the first Black President in U.S. History. This is very important to note because Obama had a strong connection with Africa. His father, Barack Obama, Sr. was a senior governmental economist for Kenya.
In 2009, President Muammar Gaddafi of Libya becomes chairman of the African Union, a continental union consisting of 55 member states located on the continent of Africa. This is VERY important.
As President of the African Union, he proposed immediate unity and the establishment of a single currency, army and passport for the entire continent. He and others desired for there to be a United States of Africa! It is important to note, Gaddafi opposed AFRICOM.
2011, there are attempts by right wing forces to overthrow Gaddafi. The U.N. Security Council Resolution 1973 authorizes a no fly zone in Libya. NATO forces (Led by the U.S., France, and U.K.) violate the U.N. agreement and starts Bombing Libya, intend for Gadaffi to be killed.
How did this U.S. Bombing of Libya occur? In 2011, then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton went to Paris and met with some world leaders eager to see Gadaffi overthrown. "Clinton joined a White House meeting by phone and forcefully urged Obama to take military action." He agreed.
October 20, 2011: Due to the bombing carried out by NATO (led by U.S., U.K. and France) insurgents are able to capture and kill Gaddafi, the president of Libya. The first Black president leads International military operation to kill an African Leader (Gaddafi and Obama pic below)
Death of Gaddafi leads to: Enhanced military capacities of Boko Haram, civil war in Mali and
destabilization and armed conflict in Central African Republic, Chad, Niger and dismembering of Libya. Due to the unrest, African leaders became more receptive of the US AFRICOM program.
By 2014, there was an estimated between 5,000 - 8,000 U.S. troops in Africa. U.S. carried out 674 military missions across the continent — an average of nearly two per day
and an increase of about 300 percent since the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) was launched in 2008.
By 2016, since the launch of AFRICOM in 2008, there was a 1,900 percent in US military
presence on the African continent. In 2020, U.S. spends nearly $2 billion on African operations. While police Militarization increased in Black communities in the U.S. under the 1033 program.
Under Trump, AFRICOM has continued to expand. He eased some of the rules and regulations surrounding combat strikes in Somalia, allowing the AFRICOM commanders to carry out drone strikes on targets more speedily without Oval Office approval.
AFRICOM said it conducted a total of 91 airstrikes against Somalia and Libya from February 2019 to March 31, 2020. On February 23, 2019, an AFRICOM drone strike killed two civialians in Somalia, a woman and child. Many more civilians have died in Africa due to these strikes.
I made this thread to highlight the two edged sword of America's impact on the Black Diaspora, the violence is carries out in the U.S. and the violence it carries out abroad. To find out more follow: @Blacks4Peace and visit http://www.blackallianceforpeace.com  "U.S. Out of Africa" campaign.
