I’ve thought a lot about how 2008 was a normalizing election with a sea change candidate (either obama or clinton)

and how 2020 is turning into a sea change election (not returning to pre-2016, but demanding more & better) with a normalizing candidate.

This is ok, and …
I’m glad our nominee is @JoeBiden.

“Uncle Joe” is about as normalizing as we can get - older, whiter, Senate-er.

But. (This is becoming a thread!)

One; he’s the “old white Senator” who cheerfully played second fiddle to that young, charismatic Black man.

2/
Two, Biden has been around. He understands that progress moves incrementally; slowly. He understands how to read a moment.

Three, He has never been afraid of progress. He embraces it. He adapts his views accordingly.

3/
And perhaps most importantly, he knows how to talk about significant change in a way that makes folks less likely to support that change come along for the ride.

It’s important, when looking at history, to understand that it takes all kinds of people to effect change.

4/
Civil Rights needed Martin and Malcolm and Rosa and John and the tens of thousands of others marching and protesting and demanding equality.

Those lions of our history, and countless others whose stories are not as etched into our consciousness, pushed the nation to change.

5/
It was a somewhat conservative white guy from Texas named Lyndon who ultimately met that tidal wave demand for change and guided a nation to accepting it as a done deal.

I’m not a historian, so maybe I’m glossing over things a historian wouldn’t forget.

6/
But it isn’t my point to tell history we all should know.

My point is that in times that demand much of us, we ALL have a role to play.

I know that @JoeBiden will continue to serve his nation well, with humility and dignity.

I’m proud to support him.

7/
I know I will do my part as a nameless, faceless footnote in history - someone who didn’t stand idly by, but who advocated, protested, pushed, and prodded our nation to be all she has promised to be. Who followed the call of this moment’s voices.

Will you do your part too?
