Now is precisely the time to be critical of organizations that claim to do social justice work— especially those run by white folks. We should absolutely be taking a fine tooth comb to what every org is saying right now in their “support” statements. Saddle up for a 🧵.
Let’s take one organization, @thorn for example. Their statement of support that went out today is below. They claim “solidarity with the Black community”, “fighting injustice” every, and that they are “listening.” The statement is... fine.
What does their org structure look like? Who is leading? The answer is that the top of the org is all white folks.
Well, but they do good work! They are stopping child trafficking! Yes, but it’s an issue that disproportionately impacts Black and Brown communities and members of those communities don’t seem to be in the room making decisions. What about the board of directors?
The board of directors is also... all white. Every one of them. And that’s actually not the worst part here. Let’s focus on one of these board members.
The co-founder of @PalantirTech sits on this board. You might not have heard of Palantir before. Follow me.
Palantir has assisted with ICE raids for at least a decade, including one that was responsible for terror of the Latinx community in Mississippi this past year. They are also the lead company for police surveillance technology. They are powerful and scary.
Okay, so this guy helped found an evil company. That doesn’t *really* matter if he sits on this board, does it? Absolutely. NOLA is one example of a city that Palantir exploited their philanthropy relationship with to avoid public comment, contributing to mass incarceration.
When we talk about an abolition mindset, we need to be able to trust community orgs to step up on the social supports and address root causes. Orgs like @thorn who have boards and leadership that look like this need to clean house, now.
