It’s so crazy that most reformed evangelicals talk so much about depravity & how sin is so deceptive that it can work in our hearts in ways that are imperceptible unless someone points it out - but RACISM however, is a sin that one will ALWAYS be able to notice within themselves
If you even suggest to some of these guys to examine themselves and be honest about racism, bigotry or prejudices that they may have towards blacks people they get offended - why? Becuase in their arrogance they think they would ALWAYS be able to know if they have it.
And that’s becauase a lot of them think racism is just a *feeling* of hatred towards black people - that they have to wake up in the morning hating black people - and if they don’t then they’re fine - “I love black people!” “I have black friends!”
But they don’t see that it goes much deeper than that down to the very presuppositions, stereotypes, attitudes, thoughts, assumptions, etc of black people that causes you to think of them as more irresponsible, violent, unscrulpous, gullible, etc as those who look like you
For some reason, the sin of partiality in the context of racism is a sin that they believe they would NEVER need help seeing in themselves - why? Becuase in their own arrogance they don’t believe they could EVER miss it becuase they would *feel* it, right?
You name any other sin that they would say it’s okay to have that type of heart posture towards? ZERO. If you said that about any other sin they would call you arrogant and one not taking heed to himself but for some reason it’s totally fine for them to do that with racism.
Partiality is sin which means racism is sin but for some of my white reformed evangelical brothers and sisters it’s the one sin that they will NEVER EVER be able to be deceived by - it’s the one sin that they will ALWAYS be able to see & catch..That my friends is called pride.
NOT ONE PERSON on this earth is immune from sin’s deception; not one person on this earth is immune from engaging in sin in a way that they can’t even see but others can. It is the height of arrogance to not even consider that you could be and thus reject examination.
Self-examination is uncomfortable for us all but we must do it if we are to be sanctified and molded into the image of Christ.
