Today is another Bandcamp day (i.e. all their revenues go to artists/labels), so I'm gonna give shoutouts to some of the incredible black/brown artists I work with and/or admire – in particular those whose music/lyrics is rooted in the struggle of being a PoC in a racist country.
First up, the incredible Angel Bat Dawid – afro-futurist jazz clarinettist, vocalist, spiritual angel and so much more from Chicago. @angeltheoracle @intlanthem. https://intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/the-oracle
Next: Anthony Joseph - the great British-Trinidadian musician/poet/novelist/academic/polymath. @adjoseph https://anthonyjosephofficial.bandcamp.com/album/people-of-the-sun
British-Indian clarinettist and composer Arun Ghosh, whose album "but where are you really from?" must have one of the most on-point titles ever. @arunghosh https://arunghosh.bandcamp.com/album/but-where-are-you-really-from
Irish-Zambian rapper/poet @DeniseChaila - who speaks nothing but truth about the black Irish experience. https://denisechaila.bandcamp.com/
Visionary experimental dancehall/grime artist @GAIKASAYS – who as I've said before would be rightly hailed as the voice of a generation if the music industry wasn't run by white people. He's not on Bandcamp but check out his current Nine Nights project:

https://www.tserecords.com/nine-nights
Irreversible Entanglements: the revolutionary free jazz / spoken word quintet who embody black liberation through music and poetry. @moormother @keirneuringer @aquilespty @lukeostewart. https://intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/who-sent-you
He died tragically young but Julius Eastman was one of the most important avant garde composers of his time – dealing with issues of race, sexuality, and gender. Listen to this brilliant radio doc @ElaineMitchener + @zakiasewell did on him for @BBCRadio4: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000112x
I gotta shoutout my dear friend and incredibly talented singer/actress/pharmacist extraordinaire @musicbyloah who has been so brave and eloquent over the last couple of weeks (and her entire life tbh): https://loah.bandcamp.com/album/this-heart-ep
Loraine James – a black, queer artist who put all the basic IDM white dudes to shame with her incredible debut album "For You and I". @LoJamMusic @Hyperdub. https://lorainejames.bandcamp.com/
Matana Roberts – a unique saxophonist, vocalist, and composer who is four records into a powerful twelve part series of concept albums about American slavery called Coin Coin. @cstrecords https://matana-roberts.bandcamp.com/album/coin-coin-chapter-four-memphis
Navá – an Irish-Iranian folk group that bring together traditions from the two (very different!) countries' rich musical histories. Big up the Irish-Iranian massiv!! @navatheband 🇮🇪🇮🇷 https://navatheband.bandcamp.com/album/sojourns-volume-1
Nihiloxica: Bugandan drumming x techno. Enough said. @nihiloxica @NyegeNyegeFest https://nyegenyegetapes.bandcamp.com/album/biiri
Rusangano Family. Hailing from a classic combination of Zimbabwe, Togo, and Co. Clare. Their solitary album "Let The Dead Bury The Dead" is a masterpiece. Still the Irish hip-hop 🐐
@RusanganoFamily @GodKnowsRF @MuRliMuRl @mynameisjOhann https://rusanganofamily.bandcamp.com/releases
Sarathy Korwar. Indian tabla player / drummer / percussionist bringing together Indian classical, jazz, and hip-hop that encapsulates the South Asian cultural and socio-political experience in Britain.
@SarathyKorwar @TheLeafLabel https://sarathykorwar.bandcamp.com/album/more-arriving
. @SeedEnsemble: @CassieKinoshi's sprawling 10 piece group whose powerful debut album "Driftglass" is inspired by a combination of racism in the UK and afro-futurist sci-fi. @jazzrefreshed https://seedensemble.bandcamp.com/album/driftglass
Shabaka Hutchings: the great thought leader and visionary of the current UK jazz scene. All three of his bands and his side hustles are brilliant but I think the Ancestors is my favourite.
@shabakah @SH_Ancestors https://shabakaandtheancestors.bandcamp.com/
Shiva Feshareki: British-Iranian composer/turntablist who manages to marry the electronic and classical musical worlds like no one else. @shivafeshareki https://resistbelfast.bandcamp.com/album/new-forms
It's not on Bandcamp but I gotta shoutout @sowetokinch's The Black Peril – an epic concept album inspired by the 1919 Race Riots, which couldn't be more relevant right now as they also happened during a pandemic... History is literally repeating itself.
Tyshawn Sorey – one of the most important drummer/composers working across classical, jazz, and experimental music right now – whatever any of those terms mean nowadays. Been trying to bring him to London for ages – we'll get there eventually! https://tyshawn-sorey.bandcamp.com/album/unfiltered
And last but by no means least: @YazzAhmed1 – British-Bahraini trumpter/composer who brings her Middle Easter heritage to the jazz idiom, with each suite on her latest album "Polyhymnia" inspired by great female role models. It's very special! @ropeadope https://yazzahmed.bandcamp.com/album/polyhymnia
That’s probably enough for one day! Those barely scratch the surface and I’m sure I’ve forgotten loads of my favourites too.

But don’t just listen to minority artists for one day, make it part of your habit to look beyond the white-led music press and Spotify algorithms.
And one important side note: I would usually never group all these artists together. They’re clearly all vastly different and should be considered in their own context - not as part of a black/brown “other” category. Making an exception this once due to current situation ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
