a meaty thread:

goldsmiths have just announced the hiring of dominic grieve - previously tory cabinet - amazingly in a time when they have said they are not employing ANYONE (hiring freeze) due to the university's finances, when they are about to FIRE 500 associate lecturers https://twitter.com/GoldsmithsUoL/status/1268181755850305539
grieve voted:

➖ for stronger enforcement of immigration rules
➖ against making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of caste
➖ consistently for the iraq war
➖ consistently against a right to remain for EU nationals
➖ consistently voted for ending financial support for some 16-19 year olds in training and further education
➖for a stricter asylum system
➖ almost always against a hunting ban
➖ against spending public money to create guaranteed jobs for young people who have spent a long time unemployed

➖ for mass surveillance of people’s communications and activities

➖ for restricting the scope of legal aid
➖ almost always for use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas
➖ consistently against raising benefits
➖ consistently for making local councils responsible for helping those in financial need afford their council tax and reducing the amount spent on such support
purely on a personal level.. I have been impacted by many of these policies. my life, my family's, the lives within my community - all were made extremely difficult & actively HOSTILE spaces by the concrete actions of people like this man. thousands and thousands of people's were
reading this voting record honestly made me feel sick and actually just upset.

any platitudes, any words by people who say they care about dismantling oppression, supporting oppressed communities, ring totally false if they are happy to employ someone like this.
students already spend so much energy, so muchhhhh timeeeeee having to prove and uncover that particular lecturers and staff members are discriminatory, that they make their time at university a hostile one
here we LITERALLY have the receipts on record of a person who is hostile to multiple experiences of oppression and marginalisation. what does that even say to everyone who breaks their backs, has broken down, exhausted themselves to try and uncover this bullshit
and make goldsmiths a less hostile, more equitable place? it literally spits in all of our faces - you can see what this person thinks in the way they have voted and you're still happy to give him the money that we pay in!!!!!!!! it IS
O U T R A G E O U S !!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope these exclamation marks can speak to my anger on the way this institution is moving right now, it's not even about just this - it's about so many other ways that goldsmiths actively punches down and this is truly for me symbolic of that.
honestly fucking GOBSMACKED that on the same day goldsmiths is grovelling re: its atrocious post on standing 'shoulder-to-shoulder' w black students, lying about commitment to anti-racism, while they're treating staff despicably, they're announcing proudly the hiring of this man.
the warden of goldsmiths, frances corner, feels 'the next generation of legal minds must not be afraid to debate all sides'. call me crazy but last I heard you are able to debate and be critically engaged without directly employing someone who has been concretely oppressive.
smacks of hypocrisy and actually just disdain for our entire community. I don't even know what to say. my heart goes out to all the ALs rn facing a terrifying moment & receiving zero empathy from goldsmiths senior management. to all the students and staff witnessing indifference
