It’s a late start, but the #MusicSermon #BlackMusicMonthChallenge is in effect!
As we’re all swinging between rage, fear, uncertainty and a host of other feelings right now, let’s start with the soundtrack we need.
Day 1: A song that makes you feel invincible.
Revised #BlackMusicMonth graphic with #2 (my bad).
To clarify; this is NOT a 30 day challenge this year bc we started TODAY. We’re on day 1 with 28 days to still end at June 30th. Y’all don’t post ahead or you’ll be finished early!
#BlackMusicMonthChallenge
For the first couple of days of #MusicSermon’s #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, we’re sharing songs we could all use right now.
Day 2: A song that gives you hope/encourages you. What lifts you out of dark places?
Happy Friday, fam. “Friday” as a concept stopped meaning anything significant three months ago, but these last 7 days have been especially brutal.
We started the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge with songs for strength and hope.
For Day 3, what song instantly changes your mood?
My first answer for Day 3: Most Donny Hathaway songs put me in my feelings in some way, but I start two steppin’ and singing to “Love, Love, Love” immediately. Even in the grocery store.
The streaming era greatly diminished the artform that is the Motion Picture Soundtrack. We’ve had a few, but they used to be a constant and dependable extention of the movie experience.
For Day 4 of #MusicSermon’s #BlackMusicMonth challenge, share your favorite soundtrack song.
My first answer for Day 4 and one of the most relevant, today: I can only tell you off top off head one other song other than Fight the Power that’s on the DTRT soundtrack. I also don’t think I know any movie that has a song placed so often.
Gen X’s first protest anthem.
Fight the Power still goes so hard, man. 30 years later.
For Day 5 of #MusicSermon’s #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, let’s talk about those times when your anger is righteous, and you wanna sit with it a little. Even stoke the flames so you don’t lose is.
What’s a song you listen to when you’re angry?
Jermaine Dupri and Dallas Austin talked during their “I Wrote That Song” IG Live about thinking of songs as mini-movies. The best ones weave a complete tale in those 3+ minutes. For Day 6 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share your favorite song that tells a story.
I gotta start with an OG answer here: Ice T “6 ‘N the Mornin’”
Someone just named this one and I had to add the clip. “Olivia” is such a mellow groove about such a tragic story.
Y'all my bad! I just realized I didn't post today's challenge prompt yet!
Today feels appropriate for Day 7's subject. We've talked about songs that make you feel invincible, songs that give you hope, songs that stoke your anger. Now, let's talk about songs that bring you comfort and/or peace. #BlackMusicMonthChallenge
My top answer today; this song + a drink is perfection.
It’s Saturday (or Sunday, or for the last 3 months, just whateverday) morning and it’s time to grab the bucket with all the cleaning supplies, the gloves and get busy. But first, we always press the play button. For Day 8, What’s the first song you hear? #BlackMusicMonthChallenge
Day 9 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge is a real one for me. As many of you know, I take karaoke very seriously.
When it’s your turn to take the mic, what’s your go-to song?
Sometimes you gotta remind people who you are. Sometimes you gotta have superhero music to remind *yourself* who you are when folks are trying you. For Day 10 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a song for the people who clearly need to ask about you.
I don’t even need to cue Day 11 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge up with a descriptor.
Y’all go ‘head and set it off...
There are songs we grew up hearing our parents play so much, that as adults we realized we’d taken possession of them as personal jams. For Day 12 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, in honor of missed Summer family cookouts, name a song that was your parents’ jam, and is now yours
Today’s #BlackMusicMonthChallenge is prompting me to ask:
Parents: do your kids see you dancing/hear you singing along to your favorites? If two partners are in the household, have they seen y’all dance together?
X’ers and younger, have you taught them your old dance routines?
We’ve been talking off and on here about a generational passing-down that’s gotten lost in the digital era. I wanna point those opportunities out where I can.
For Day 13 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, we’re celebrating the R&B duet - currently an endangered musical species (which is really sad). Name a duet (or a few) you love.
And I've been SUPER SLACK on adding existing playlists for some of these #BlackMusicMonthChallenge days. That's my bad.
If you need a refresher of great R&B duets, I got something for you. I probably need to go back and update the playlist myself. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0G9MSZEyXboXP3F2T800nH?si=c1wciNe_Qpqek1RDHn6lyQ
Y’all! My bad. Somebody asked me where today’s #BlackMusicMonthChallenge prompt was like 5 hours ago and I still forgot.

Fortunately, Day 14 needs no explanaition. GO!
Day 15 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge is a little different. Today’s not about the songs, but the *videos*. We all have joints we wish we could have been in. What’s yours?
I apologize in advance for how some of y’all are gonna get in your feelings for Day 16 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge.

Tell us about a song that reminds you of your first love.
My feelings about the swift-approaching commercialization of #Juneteenth aside, I put this prompt here intentionally, bc Black music is an act of self-liberation. ✊🏾
So for Day 17 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share the BLACKEST song you can think of, sonically or lyrically.
And if you need a soundtrack for today, I offer you the playlist of last year's "BLACKEST song you can think of" answers: Black is Black: The Soundtrack.

Yesterday, we celebrated #Juneteenth with the Blackest songs we could think of.

Today, for Day 18 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, let’s shift gears: What’s the SEXIEST song you know?
We have now entered the “Let’s argue” portion of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge (yay!)

We’ll start easy: For Day 19, share a cover you think was better than the origional.
I mentioned it's arguing time for the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge right?
Ok, so every year, this is our most contentious day. Let's all prepare and say a little prayer over the TL.

Day 20: A song most people love that you absolutely hate.

*hides*
Ok... my selections (first round)

*Deep breath*

Boyz II Men x Song for Mama
Usher & AK x My Boo
Bey x Halo
After the rudeness and blasphemy generated from yesterday's #BlackMusicMonthChallenge prompt, let's bring it in for a big timeline hug. 🤗

For Day 21, name a song that makes you feel warm and fuzzy.
*Runs over to #BlackMusicMonthChallenge*
Sorry guys, I just realized I didn't post today's prompt!

Which is probably for the best, because I don't want y'all trapped in a glass box of emotions for the whole day.

For Day 22, share a song that always puts you in your feelings.
I'm kinda excited to see your answers for today's #BlackMusicMonthChallenge. I'm curious to know the various factors you consider for your answer.

For Day 23, what's your idea of a perfect song, and tell us why if you can.
Today’s #BlackMusicMonthChallenge prompt is a good one for a friday, I think.

For Day 24, share a song attached to a great memory. And, if you can and are willing, tell us the memory!
One thing qurantine has taught some and affirmed for others is that we can party ANYWHERE. It can go down in the living room, 6ft away from your friends..

So in the spirit of Saturday, for Day 25 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, name a song guaranteed to make you dance. 💃🏾🕺🏾
We're coming into the last few days of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge!!

As most of us have accepted that the WHOLE Summer '20 is canceled, I ask you to think back fondly on "outside" days, and, for Day 26, share a must have song for summer functions.
It’s almost the end of June, which means almost the end of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge!

Like the “perfect song” prompt, I always love seeing your answers to this one.

For Day 27, share a song with your favorite lyrics.
