I thought I would use my calendar as inspiration to research a different volcano each month đŸ€“ It gives me an opportunity to learn about volcanoes I may not be as familiar with 🌋

I’m aware I am 6 months late to this 😂 I thought about doing it back in January but never got round to it 🙈 better late than never!
January: Stromboli 🌋
Volcanic island off the coast of Italy that erupts almost constantly - the current eruptive phase began back in 1934!
Classified as a stratovolcano, it erupts with frequent mild explosions, lending it’s name to the eruption type “Strombolian” #monthlyvolcano
February: Shiveluch 🌋
Volcano located in Kamchatka, Russia that is frequently in a state of eruption.
It is also classified as a stratovolcano and is around 60,000-70,000 years old #monthlyvolcano
Eruptions are often highly explosive and lava domes can form which collapse to create pyroclastic flows. There have been over 60 of these large explosive eruptions in the last 10,000 years, making it the most vigorous andesitic volcano of the Kuril-Kamchatka arc #monthlyvolcano
The summit reaches 3283m and has many lava domes on its outer flanks. Widespread tephra layers from the eruptions have been extremely useful for dating the historic events #monthlyvolcano
If you have any more info about Shiveluch, feel free to add it to this thread! đŸ‘‡đŸŒ‹đŸ€“ #monthlyvolcano
March: Methana 🌋
Volcano in Greece, comprised of a group of 32 mostly dacitic lava domes which began forming around 1-2 million years ago.
Hot springs can be found along the coast of the peninsula #monthlyvolcano
April: Mt Lokon 🌋
Volcano in Indonesia twinned with Mt Empung. They rise around 800m above the Tondano plain and are some of the most active volcanoes of Sulawesi.
It is classed as a stratovolcano
