Someone recently brought up a Gundam take I thought was common or I thought wasn't a big deal when I brought it up so I at least want to talk about it this is about the last episode of Gundam 08th ms team and what I think it's about.
The last episode of 08th ms team was cut from the toonami run and you would not notice it because well, it ended on a note where it was done. I didn't notice. So the actual last episode got this mystical feel to it until you got the dvds.
The episode does not feature mobile suit fighting at all and has newtype bs which some fans hate. So you know this episode is not well regarded but I'm one of those guy who was like hey this episode has some extra closure but is a little weird.
Mostly because this episode feature kids who don't show up anywhere else in the show, and the episode is about burying one of their friends. So it's an episode about death. Why would the production do this? Well do you know about the production of 08th ms team?
08th Ms team was initially directed by Takeyuki Kanda who died halfway through the production this guy was a veteran at Sunrise directing some of their best stuff in my opinion. The show is actually littered with references to his work.
so in my opinion the last episode is the staff mourning his loss, but this is just why I think this I will go over evidence and I will let you decide. For one the kids being seperated from adults bring to mind Round Vernian Vifam about a group of kids who have to get home.
The kids themselves bring to mind several characters he directed but this might be me stretching this because I can't look up interviews to confirm this so grain of salt.
Well that's actually why I'm making this thread can anyone get any interviews or confirmation about this episode? Because to me this is an episode not about ending 08th but about mourning the loss of a director.
Because the death in the episode is unique we never see the character's face just him covered or his eyes out of reach, this is usually done to imagine someone else in role.
The ending also makes me thinks this was an attempt to mourn and celebrate him, most of his real robot work has something akin to happy ending or at least not hugely sad ones.I always felt his stories were human in that way. The kids disappear too giving this weird mystical vibe.
