From what I can tell, it seems like the NYPD allowed the looting in Soho to happen. Saturday night it was mostly broken glass. By Monday morning it was full on looting. Soho looks like a war zone. Did the police not expect this to escalate? 1/5
I am genuinely curious: is this a tactic by the NYPD meant to deescalate, were they outnumbered and didn’t want to start a war, or is it some sort of closing ranks? A way to say without cops this is what happens? Thoughts? 2/5
Obviously, the looters are not the majority of the protesters. I think some professionals may have cased the joint from the thorough way all the jewelry stores and the Leica store were emptied. The rest was just random disorganized looting. 3/5
I am not crying for Soho with its obnoxious luxury brands and absurd price tags, but it is shocking to see how easily the social contract can tear. It’s easy to be tempted to walk into the broken glass and take something. It’s mayhem. 4/5
While the rage against the machine is understandable, looting just helps confirm the bias of those who find it more outrageous than the systemic violence against Black people. It’s a perverse self-fulfilling prophecy. Peace. 5/5
