While it is as important as ever for people to be vocal and supporting those on the front lines of this, I feel so uneasy with Black Lives Matter posts from Netflix/Glossier/whoever. Similar to rainbow flags that suddenly appear at pride time 1/6
Only now that it is convenient are corps siding with Black people. Saying Black lives matter, even donating to bail funds etc. is not enough. Do these corporations outwardly support defunding the police and abolishing prisons? 2/6
Do they combat racism in their own practices beyond diversity platitudes? Do they redistribute wealth beyond occasional donations? Why are some celebrating capitalist corps for simply acknowledging Black people as human beings? 3/6
Let us instead focus on amplifying the voices of Black people who have been meaningfully organizing and saying all of this for YEARS. As a white, cis, settler Canadian citizen I have little authority to speak about this, but I will do the work that I can. 4/6
