There's a difference between bad cops and bad protesters. Bad cops hold positions of authority. They aren't temporarily out breaking windows, they have ongoing power which they can wield with deadly force. That's why it's important to focus more on bad cops than on some looters.
And as I've said before, the bad cops make the job much more dangerous and difficult for the many good cops out there. It only takes a few to make the rest look bad, to turn communities against police forces etc.
Also, some people have tried to argue that there haven't been very many instances of police violence during these riots. I disagree, but it's also beside the point. Police brutality against minorities has been going on for years. The war on drugs has been around for decades.
The militarization of police forces, overuse of SWAT teams, etc. is all part of this bigger, systemic problem that disproportionately impacts poor communities, people of color, etc. If you don't see this it's because you haven't been paying attention.
