We can hold multiple truths at the same time, a thread on outside instigators, looting, rioting, and other anti-Black property nonsense: [1/7]

#BlackLivesMatter

1) Black people are enraged at injustice and inequality and want to burn shit down, which is an impulse for which it's worth feeling empathy and grace because property, an anchor for racial inequality in this country, is insured and replaceable while people are not; [2/7]
2) All sorts of people are "looting" and "rioting" because they want stuff, which is frankly the outcome of a racial capitalism that encourages consumption and articulates emancipation through more consumption; [3/7]
3) Police are escalating protests and taking out journalists at night in order to create the optics of chaos and reasonable, sanitized violence; this is a way of preventing white allies from mobilizing; [4/7]
4) White nationalists are using the protests to escalate violence - so are white people that are taking a stand against racial injustice in this country; [5/7]
5) Bad faith political actors are mobilizing the outside instigator narrative as well as the repentant police narrative to delegitimize Black rage as well as cultivate white complacency; be wary of their ethical and moral declarations in this moment; [6/7]
Power and protest is complex and nuanced. There's a lot divide and conquer happening out there, right out of classic racist playbooks. Ultimately, militarized police and racial capitalism are the problem, don't lose sight of that. People before property, always. [7/7]
