Racism is real. Science has repeatedly shown it causes psychological and physiological damage.

We need to educate ourselves, so this thread will help highlight some of the key findings with @deray @thedanieb @KidFury #BlackLivesMatter

Science shows that the name on a resume makes a difference. People with traditionally black sounding last names are given less opportunities #BlackLivesMatter

2/8
Studies show that teachers are more likely to punish black students over white students for the same behavior. Prison sentences for the same crime are also 10% longer for black men and use of force is 3.6x higher. #BlackLivesMatter

3/8
Science shows that racism can have a major impact on health - decreasing mental health, causing sleep difficulties, obesity and even asthma. There are even links to breast cancer, hypertension and heart disease #BlackLivesMatter

4/8
Racial bias even exists in the medical field. Half of white medical students and residents still believe in false biological differences between white and black patients which contribute to improper treatment and care #BlackLivesMatter

5/8
Studies show that our ability to judge other races is learned from our parents and environment. Children develop the same facial recognition patterns and biases of their parents, even when they are adopted by a different race. #BlackLivesMatter

6/8
So how can we minimize racial bias? Studies have found that simply being exposed to more diverse faces in a positive light, or spending more time with people of different races and backgrounds minimize biases.

REPRESENTATION MATTERS #BlackLivesMatter

Finally, science FLOURISHES when diverse people work together. Studies show that when a research paper has a diverse mix of authors, the work received 10% more citations and prestige. #BlackLivesMatter
