We unfortunately experienced the shooting of Walter Scott and the shootings of Mother Emanuel when I was governor in SC. Times like these are trying and require action.Leaders must act quickly. Mayors/governors across the country need to lead during this time. This is what we did
Support the family. They are grieving right now and have had to watch their loved one die in the public eye over and over again. Listen to the protestors, work with law enforcement to find out why this happened and what is going to be done to fix it.
Keep protestors safe. For the rioters and looters, treat them like the criminals they are and arrest them. Follow procedures but laws are laws and must not be violated. Finally, bring people together to honor the loss and commit to solutions to make sure it won’t happen again.
We are in this together. We are not a perfect country but we have to fight to make her better. It will take all of us. Most people in our country think what happened was wrong. Our leaders need to step up and bring everyone together. In the name of George Floyd...
Our result:
From the shooting of Walter Scott: South Carolina passed the first body camera bill in the country
From the Mother Emanuel shooting: South Carolina came together removed the divisive symbol of the Confederate flag and committed to love each other and do better.
