Don't plug gunshot wounds with tampons! DO locate the source of bleeding with a gloved finger and pack the site with gauze.

Don't do chemistry in people's eyeballs! DO use water to rise chemical weapons from eyes.
DON'T pack a chest or abdomen wound with gauze. DO make a seal by taping a flexible airtight material down on THREE SIDES (seen ppl use an empty bag of chips, credit card, anything). MONITER THEM CLOSELY. Remove if breathing rapidly worsens- this is a rare condition but happens.
DON'T think you aren't experienced enough to help! DO know the limits of your knowledge. Get creative within what you know rather than trying to do something you don't know how to do. This is how a bad day turns into the last day of someone's life
One last thing that YOU can do to save someone's life from a piercing gunshot wound-- Apply FIRM, direct pressure to the site of the bleed. Use a t shirt, rag, towel, gauze... It is the difference between life or death. Do this (or direct someone to) before you do anything else!
Great point from the replies: unless there is *major bleeding* or the person's heart or lungs have completely ceased functioning, your priority is usually to get them out and to the hospital.
