I’ve noticed a lot of people sharing videos of cops making speeches or hugging protestors or joining them. IMO there are better ways to demonstrate that you care about Black lives and injustice in this moment
Showing love, compassion, and solidarity is what all non black people should be trying to do—no argument there—but videos that serve to say “not all cops” aren’t the point. The point is Black Lives Matter, and our society treats them like they don’t.
Police departments around the country are so clearly a major part of the problem. It’s great that some have created good relationships with the communities they serve. But let’s be mindful about who we’re casting as heroes here
If you find yourself relating more and finding more inspiration from these “good cops” than the people protesting, think about why that is
I only speak for myself, but I think all non black people’s time is better spent doing the work to educate ourselves, reaching out to people in our lives, not turning away when things get hard/stressful, and doing what we can (vote, call, etc) to affect systemic change
That’s it for me and my soapbox today. Stay safe and strong out there. And because we all don’t say it enough: Black Lives Matter
