this white dot is one person we followed. it was a senior government official. we used housing records to identify them. we actually traced two phones here – this person and their spouse. we found both of their workplaces and saw everywhere else they went. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/12/19/opinion/location-tracking-cell-phone.html
we couldn't easily identify people who lived in apartment buildings or didn't own their homes. but so what? we could still follow them back to their homes and arrive at their front door. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/12/21/opinion/pasadena-smartphone-spying.html
the data is stored for all time. it's sold to parties who are never disclosed. you will never get the data back and never learn who has access to it. you will never get to "undo" the tracking.
so some laws need to change around all that, i think.
note: we've deleted the data
