The NYC irony, white Millennials/GenZers move in to gentrify black & Latino neighborhoods, plant a church called “The ______,” claim “anti-racism” but have ZERO involvement with actual NYC minorities & run to the #GorgeFloydProtests b/c they love black lives? Or just anti-police?
The question for all the “woke” white evangelicals in NYC or any city: what’s the relationship between your newly found love of black lives & the brunches you post about Instagram in the neighbors where blacks are being displaced? What are you doing for the displaced ones?
Here’s why this matters: the blacks most likely to encounter corrupt suburban police outside of cities are the ones being gentrified out of them. The blacks in cities are ones *you* want out of your new neighborhood so you can enjoy brunch, craft beer, & expensive coffee.
Because the middle-class views low-income blacks as “the rabble,” gentrification delivers low-income blacks into the hands of police departments who have incentives to control them so as to maintain the Mon-Sat consumption life of everyone in your social justice church plant.
The ones currently being over criminalized are the ones caught in the matrix of gentrification in cities & suburbs. Because *you* move to cities as consumers, not participants, your arrival creates externalities that must be on your radar. “The Rabble”👉🏾 https://www.amazon.com/Ending-Overcriminalization-Mass-Incarceration-Society/dp/1108446299
