#PostABird #BlackBirdersWeek In my tribe, the Asante, based in Ghana, one of our significant symbols is a bird called Sankofa (pronounced "San-koh-faa").

It essentially means that life requires critical examination and reflection. That's why the bird is turning its head.

The literal translation is the following:

SAN (return)
KO (go)
FA (look, seek and take)

It is symbol important to my people and oftentimes used in the context of acquiring knowledge and wisdom.

My mom told me that her mother shared with her that the nature of bird is that it turns its head and the egg coming out of its mouth represents the future, which means:

"In order to understand our present and ensure our future, we must know our past."
