I wanted to create a Pride Month thread of all the important people and events we have to thank for our rights as an LGBTQIA+ community. 🌈
Matthew Shepard, a gay American college student who was beaten, tortured and left to die near Laramie, Wyoming on October 6, 1998. His death, alongside James Byrd Jr., prompted the Matthew Shepard Act, which expanded the 1969 United States federal hate-crime law.
Karamo Brown became the first openly gay black man on reality TV when he started his career in television on MTV’s reality series The Real World: Philadelphia in 2004.
In 1970, Chicago held its first gay pride parade, historically documenting one of the first pride parades as we know them.
On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down all state bans on same-sex marriage, legalizing it in all fifty states.
