WAYS FOR NON-BLACK PEOPLE TO BE ALLIES: A THREAD‼️ #BLM #blacklivesmatter
DONATE, PROTEST, AND POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA: These are the most common things you can do, and they’re great. But there are already threads about these, so here’s some ~advanced allyship~ tactics you can use:
RECORD: If you see a black person interacting on the street with a cop EVER, record it. Let the officer know you’re recording. Hold them accountable, and have video in case things get racist.
SHARE NEWS WRITTEN BY BLACK PEOPLE: The news is mostly white, but not exclusively. Let us control our owns stories by sharing news written by our own. Black journalists have perspective and empathy that white journalists could never have.
TALK TO YOUR COP RELATIVE: If you have a friend or family member who is a cop, have the hard talks with them. Argue. Show them brutality. Ask them what they would have done differently. Have them PROMISE you that they won’t be bystanders to brutality.
CHECK IN ON YOUR BLACK FRIENDS: Right now is scary, and watching public executions is (needless to say) horrible for one’s mental health. Call your black friends and be a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on.
PROVIDE SUPPORT TO PROTESTORS: Protesting is great, but coming prepared is better. Bring first aid kits, water bottles, masks, hand sanitizer, etc to share with people. This is something easy that can really ensure the safety of people making change.
WEAR A BLM SHIRT: Silly, but effective. Whether you’re in a Zoom meeting or going to buy groceries, wear a pro-black t-shirt. It will spark hard conversations and make “apolitical” people uncomfortable. That’s the point. Make sure to buy it from black artists, too.
