Here is what we see in Minneapolis right now. Protests continue to happen that call for police accountability and justice for George Floyd. But those weren't happening last night. Instead, there were groups of white men - some seemingly very coordinated, others not ..
These men beat up people who tried to stop them from vandalism and robbery https://twitter.com/msepic/status/1267336388711677957
Friends have given me first-hand accounts of chasing small groups of white men dressed in black through their neighborhoods in south Minneapolis.
And on North, these guys pulled up in a nice, new maroon pickup and set a store on fire. https://twitter.com/jeremiah4north/status/1267384136744013824
When we say there are outsiders causing destruction, we are not saying that everything would be hunky dory around here if it weren't for those darned outside agitators. We're saying there is a coordinated destruction effort independent from protests for George Floyd.
There were absolutely people who were part of the protests destroying property last week. I interviewed some of them. Their rage at years of injustice was palpable and whatever you think about their tactics they were Minneapolis residents motivated by Floyd's death.
But there is a pretty clear difference between the violence that happened during those protests and what we are seeing now. There is also evidence (the Umbrella Man) of instigation to expand violence during the protests.
Both things can, in fact, be happening at once. And are. And the fury I have heard in this city at the deliberate arsons separate from the protests ... that's huge. And it's very different from how people responded to protest violence, where biz owners expressed empathy.
