1/ #MedEdMethodsMonday this wk is on DEEP LISTENING.

2020 has been full of challenges & events revealing the divisiveness in our world.

#MedTwitter, as leaders in #MedEd we must practice to listen deeply to pts, colleagues, & learners.

What do I mean by “deep listening?”
2/ Good Listener, redefined

I’ve always thought I was a good listener. My friends and patients often told me so.

Then I took a leadership class @YaleSOM this spring for my #MedEd Masters & 🤯

Have you heard of the 3 levels of listening??
3/ Listening Levels
I never heard of levels of listening until my class when we were discussing #coaching.

The authors of “Coactive Coaching” describe 3 levels of listening. http://tiny.cc/CoActiveCoaching

1. Internal listening
2. Focused listening
3. Global listening
4/ Level 1 - Internal Listening

As an introvert, and as an early learner in medical school, I was often stuck in level 1 listening-worried about what I might say & how I was being perceived.

I was listening to speak & not listening very well.
5/ Internal Listening

If you’ve ever forgotten someone’s name seconds after asking like I have, that was probably level 1 listening.

Another example paraphrased from the Coactive Coaching book:
6/ Level 2-Focused Listening aka listening to hear

I find I am in this level with peers, friends/family. I’m actively hearing the words they are speaking. But not 100% there to catch the deeper subtleties.
7/ Focused Listening

Hear is the same example conversation at level 2 listening
8/ Level 3-Global Listening

If I’m honest, my level 3 listening had unconsciously been reserved for my patients.

In level 3, I am:
🦻🏼 seeking to understand
🦻🏼 reading emotion & nonverbal cues
🦻🏼 actively trying to read between the lines
9/ Global Listening

Level 3 takes active mental energy. It also means being emotionally present.

Take the prior sample conversation, now in level 3:
10/ Level 3 listening takes INTENTIONAL PRACTICE.

But, it helps the listener
⚡️ understand WHY
⚡️ avoid assumptions
⚡️ build deeper relationships
🔥 be a more effective leader
11/ At what level do you think you most often listen?
12/ To get to level 3:

⚡️ Quiet the internal voice when others are speaking
⚡️ Allow⏱for reflection. “Let me think about that for a sec.”
⚡️ Summarize & reflect what you hear
⚡️ Read & name emotions. “You sound xxx”
⚡️ Ask yourself WHY some1 says something
⚡️”Tell me more...”
