Have you heard of the 3 levels of listening??
3/ Listening Levels
I never heard of levels of listening until my class when we were discussing #coaching.
The authors of “Coactive Coaching” describe 3 levels of listening. http://tiny.cc/CoActiveCoaching
1. Internal listening
2. Focused listening
3. Global listening

4/ Level 1 - Internal Listening
As an introvert, and as an early learner in medical school, I was often stuck in level 1 listening-worried about what I might say & how I was being perceived.
I was listening to speak & not listening very well.

8/ Level 3-Global Listening
If I’m honest, my level 3 listening had unconsciously been reserved for my patients.
In level 3, I am:
seeking to understand
reading emotion & nonverbal cues
actively trying to read between the lines

9/ Global Listening
Level 3 takes active mental energy. It also means being emotionally present.

understand WHY
avoid assumptions
build deeper relationships
be a more effective leader

11/ At what level do you think you most often listen?
12/ To get to level 3:
Quiet the internal voice when others are speaking
Allow
for reflection. “Let me think about that for a sec.”
Summarize & reflect what you hear
Read & name emotions. “You sound xxx”
Ask yourself WHY some1 says something
”Tell me more...”
