I have been somewhat quiet online about our situation recently, but I want to give a brief history lesson of oppression that shows why #BlackLivesMatter is justified in every single way. I would like to think people care about my opinion, maybe not, but here it is.
Coming from a historical standpoint, Black History is never portrayed through our education properly. Rosa Parks did not just give up a seat on a bus, she was a militant race woman, detective, and an antirape activist long before she became the patron saint of the bus boycott.
She helped start the bus boycott in Montgomery after joining the local NAACP chapter in 1943. She served as secretary and did several different jobs but focused on talking to and gathering evidence from many different Black Americans who were assaulted by white citizens.
What history class taught you this? Going along with this, why do is there never a lesson on white flight in history classes? Suburbia was a white creation to allow schools and cities to continue to be segregated. Suburbia was a way to allow oppression to continue.
In Atlanta 1959, 1627 White students left, and 2668 students came to Atlanta public schools. 1960, 1072 white students left, 3064 black students came into these schools. Bus routes were changed and forced Black students to be on these buses for extra HOURS before and after class
Highways were created to these suburbs but economically speaking, Black Americans were not given jobs that allowed them to buy a car, forcing them to stay in cities that White Americans left. Taxes were raised for renting housing, rather than buying, once again showing oppression
Public funds were put towards building new housing, not renovating old housing. Governments KNEW Black Americans relied on older, government based housing, so they did not renovate these areas, they built suburbs. They knew they could not buy housing, so they raised rent taxes
All these are example of why Black Americans have been forced through oppression and under-the-table segregation AFTER the Civil Rights Movement. THIS ALL LEADS TO THE SOCIOLOGICAL PIECE OF MODERN SOCIETY.
If anyone actually reads through this thread, I will happily educate more on the Sociological perspective. But all I am trying to say is... These protests are not based around one event, they are based around the 400+ years of murder and oppression that Black Americans have faced
They just want their voices heard, and if they are not able to do it peacefully, then DO NOT blame them for what comes next. Do not incite violence, and do not do more damage than what has been done already. This is not just about police brutality, this about all brutality.
I hope anyone who read this was able to gain more needed information on Black History and why our school systems never justify why these events and protests will always be valid. I know it is a brief thread of history, but I hope it helps. Also sign: https://www.change.org/p/mayor-jacob-frey-justice-for-george-floyd
