It’s Pride Month
and with the current climate, I think it’s important that Allies of the LGBTQ+ and POC communities understand the significance of the Stonewall Riots. 1/7

Now this thread is intended to show people why Stonewall matters in the context of the #BlackLivesMatter
protests/riots but in no means to glorify them. 2/7

The Stonewall Riots of 1969 were the spring board of the gay rights movement, it forced the West to step up and take notice. However, what is frequently forgotten is that it wasn’t a Drag Queen throwing a brick/shot glass that started it. It was a policeman shoving someone. 3/7
That simple shove caused a whole cascade of events. Arrests, batons drawn, bottles thrown, tensions to snap and 5 days of riots ensued. A lot of hate came from a place of love. Let’s avoid history repeating itself. 4/7
But we are no longer in 1969, infact in 51 years, LGBTQ+ rights have come a long way! Almost unrecognisable, yet it’s been nearly the same length of time since the end of the US Civil Rights movement and to say the same result has occurred would be a push. 5/7
This Pride month, I hope that we as a community and our allies can come together to support our highly melanated friends, especially those within our own community. Show some love in a time of so much anger. 6/7
I’d like to point out that I don’t condone the violence and rioting at all - just like a lot of people but there is so much you can do peacefully. Sign the #BlackLivesMatter
petition below and get heard before others get hurt.
