I'm from North Wales which growing up was pretty racially homogenous. Looking at myself I've definitely let myself off the hook in the past and present. I've gifted myself the moniker of naive and related it to innocence when it's been wilful ignorance.
I also think it's easy as a Welsh person to focus on the history of English oppression (not that it's imagined). In school I was taught about The Rebecca Riots, The Welsh not, The Tonypandy Riots - all important. We were taught about the American Civil Rights movement.
So I was aware of riots, oppression and racism but not in relation to my own country. It was their problem. The part of Wales I'm from owes much of it's infrastructure to "Richard the Improver", Richard Pennant. He paid for schools, roads, Penrhyn Quarry etc. He became an MP.
Where did his money come from? Slavery. As an MP he fought against the abolition of the slave trade. He owned four plantations in Jamaica. When slavery was abolished he got a pay out of about £1.3 million in today's money for the freeing of 734 people. My home is built on slavery
I'm just learning this shit so I wanted to share it and because I'm sure there's other people like me that have presumed that the structural racism that's talked about doesn't apply to areas like theirs. But this exploitation is everywhere, this is a British problem too.
