My thread for the day is about hope.

Don reminded me this morning that there is no way America was not going to come to this. You cannot oppress, starve, poison and despise a huge chunk of your population and expect people to keep on accepting it passively.

If the arc of history bends towards justice, there are also eras of terrible steps backwards. This is one of them.

We are not very good at looking to the future. Consumerism has robbed us of much of the patience and perseverance needed to work towards a truly common goal. 2/
Perhaps Imperial America always needed to self-destruct before a truly equal union could emerge?

Perhaps Britain needed to degrade itself to the petty, brittle, isolationist Island it’s become before it could learn to be a good neighbour?

I honestly don’t know.

But there is hope for us all. We CAN select better leaders with a vision that is wide enough to encompass all of us.

Covid-19 is NOT smallpox or the bubonic plague. While awful and deadly, we HAVE no excuse not to support each other.

And while we may be in economic extremis, there are lots of countries who struggle and persist on a fuck of a lot less than we think is necessary to our survival, and this crisis should fucking teach us that NO ONE in a first world economy should be so close to the edge 5/
The lack of economic resilience felt by millions is a direct result of economic choices that did not care for the majority.

We can absolutely change that. It doesn’t take radical socialism. It just takes responsible market controls that favour the majority. 6/
And this is something many centrist, ‘capitalist’ democracies have enacted before. And it didn’t eradicate rich people either. They were just a little less obscenely rich.

None of what we want is impossible to achieve. It is all doable. If we have the will to do it.

But if we can’t get over the cult of personality, if we can’t stop ourselves from getting distracted by shiny objects, it’s going to take us a lot longer.

The bad news is, it’s really up to us. The good news is, it’s really up to us.

Have I said thank you for reading my ramblings?

Probably not.

Thank you. This thread was more for me - to write it down and hold onto it - than for anyone else. But thank you for reading.
