The false dichotomy of violence vs non-violence presupposes the fairy tale that violent acts of protesters is the moment which break with notion of social civility. It can only be harboured as an idea if we willingly ignore lived reality for the global majority.
MLK Jr being evoked in these times is a bizarre misread which speaks of the appropriation of his image by those who, in his time, violently opposed him and the movement.
Non-Violent Direct Action was a tactical decision (largely successful) employed to end segregation in Jim Crow states. Those that claim the people should follow that lead no nothing of political tactics employed to effect change.
