Hey, I've been talking a lot about the whole George Floyd protests a lot lately, and one thing I think I haven't stressed enough is that there is a middle ground to what we can do to protect citizens but also not to just get rid of cops like some suggested: Police Policy Reform
So in this thread I'll be giving overviews about police reform ideas that have been suggested in the hopes to get talks more widespread on what we can do to help protect people. I am not an expert on gov policy, but I hope we can all start talking more to (1/2)
(2/2) get politicians to pass laws, from local to national. We can make change happen at all levels of government, by voting for candidates who adopt the policies into there platforms, and voting out those who don't. So with that, let's start:
(One final note, I will be listing the suggestions made by Campaign Zero, a group formed to help get police policy reform passed to prevent police killings from happening in the first place, check them out and what you can do: https://www.joincampaignzero.org )
Ending Broken Window Policing:
Decriminalizing crimes such as Marijuana Possession and Spitting (yes, that really is a policed crime), ending profiling and stop and frisk, and establishing alt. approaches to mental health crises http://joincampaignzero.org/brokenwindows
Community Oversight:
Establishing effective civilian oversight structures, such as Police Commissions and Civilian Complaints Offices, and Removing barriers to reporting police misconduct https://www.joincampaignzero.org/oversight
Limit The Use Of Force: (1/2)
Establish standards and reporting of police use of deadly force, revise and strengthen local police department use of force policies, end traffic-related police killings and dangerous high-speed police chases, and monitor how police use force and...
Limit The Use Of Force: (2/2)
... hold officers accountable for excessive force https://www.joincampaignzero.org/force
Independent Investigations And Prosecutions: (1/2)
Lower the standard of proof for Department of Justice civil rights investigations of police officers, use federal funds to encourage independent investigations and prosecutions, establish a permanent Special Prosecutor's Office..
Independent Investigations And Prosecutions: (2/2)
...at the State level for cases of police violence, and Require independent investigations of all cases where police kill or seriously injure civilians https://www.joincampaignzero.org/investigations
Community Representation:
Increase the number of police officers who reflect the communities they serve, and use community feedback to inform police department policies and practices https://www.joincampaignzero.org/representation
Training:
Invest in Rigorous and Sustained Training, and intentionally consider 'unconscious' or 'implicit' racial bias https://www.joincampaignzero.org/train
End For-Profit Policing:
End police department quotas for tickets and arrests, limit fines and fees for low-income people, prevent police from taking the money or property of innocent people, and require police departments to bear the cost of misconduct https://www.joincampaignzero.org/end-policing-for-profit
Demilitarization:
The demilitarization of police, such as restricting federal transfers of military surplus equipment and local restrictions to prevent Police Departments from purchasing or using Military weaponry https://www.joincampaignzero.org/demilitarization
Fair Police Contracts: (1/2)
Remove barriers to effective misconduct investigations and civilian oversight, keep officers' disciplinary history accessible to police departments and the public, ensure financial accountability for officers and police departments that kill or...
Just those 10 reforms alone would make police killings way less common in the US, and still allow for the policing system to do the job it was meant to do: protect everyone fairly and equally. I understand that the system has let so many down, and that some...
... wounds can truly never be healed by the impacts of decades of police being let lose without the proper policies in place, but we can hope with these we can prevent the next George Floyd, and hope are nation never again suffers the lose of an innocent civilian to a cop.
Before this thread ends, I have two requests: Share https://www.joincampaignzero.org/  with everyone you know, from the far left to the far right, to the old to the young. The more people research and educate themselves on these reforms, the more a talk can start on how we get them passed.
Secondly, email this PDF to every politician you know, from the local mayor to the candidates for president. Even if you think someone has already emailed them it, still do it. Write them how you feel and why they should adopt the policies from Campaign Zero, and even if they...
don't agree with all or any them, keep pushing. And if they continue to not budge, vote them the hell outta the office they heard. Research candidates who do, email the ones who dont already have a public opinion on the subject of police reform, and vote in every election, from..
... the locals to the states to the national elections. All of them matter, and we will change nothing by not voting. Remember to register for this and every election, and research and vote for every office on the ballot, they all matter.
Thank you for reading, justice for George Floyd, and stay safe.
