It’s the 1st of June, which in southern Australia is called the first day of winter. In the northern hemisphere stories we learn as kids winter is a time of stasis, death, hibernation - but here in Melbourne the wattles & native clematis are in bud & the bursaria is setting seed.
The hop goodenia, correas, casuarinas, & many eucalypts are flowering. Words are more than just words: they shape our understanding. I‘ve made a conscious effort to stop applying European seasonal names to this continent; I’d urge other non-Indigenous people here to do the same.
A necessary though belated addition to this thread - as well as stopping using inappropriate European season names, try of course to learn if you can what seasons are recognised in the Indigenous culture where you live.
