y'know it's infuriating to see that the US police response to protests about police violence is yet more police violence
The original act was despicable and frankly and unfortunately all too common. That's why I didn't pay much attention too this in the beginning.
However something that is NOT common is targeted violence against reporters trying to do their job. I could fill this thread with stories I've heard. From the police arresting a TV crew live on air to them shooting at the face of a photographer, blinding her in one eye
I followed the Hong Kong protests fairly closely when they originally popped up and I can see a few similarities here such as the liberal use of tear gas and rubber bullets and the aggression towards members of the press.
The police are massively at fault throughout all of this. It has happened time and time again and fuelled the #BlackLivesMatter movement. There is plenty of evidence that the US justice system disadvantages people of colour.
There have been laws made specifically to allow police to search anyone at will. This power is mostly used on minorities, which seems pretty systemically racist to me.
Last Week Tonight has done multiple episodes on this
and
So, whats different this time. For one thing you have the US president threatening to send in the army using "unlimited power". There was already agitation over lockdown rules and over people protesting those lockdown rules.
Will this continue? I don't know. Is the death of George Floyd despicable? Yes. Am I shocked at the police escalation? No. Am I shocked at the president? Unfortunately No. Am I shocked at the targeting of media? Yes.
Folks in America. Stay safe. Good luck. #JusticeForGeorge
