I’m sorry but I cannot overstate how incredibly wrong-headed and dangerous it is to hand people over to the police, even if they’re dumb ass white people doing things you don’t like. https://twitter.com/breaking911/status/1267249136937689089
If you are taking to the streets with an abolitionist vision in mind, as so many comrades including @sheabutterfemme has reminded us to do, your street tactics CANNOT and SHOULD NOT arrest/interaction with the state as punishment.
It’s a couple of reasons why. First of all, it makes no sense to sit around deriding white people self-deputizing and calling 911 on black people and then doing this. The rationale is the same: the threat of carceral punishment is being actively weaponized.
Secondly, it stands to be seen how it’ll actually play out but the DOJ is increasingly going to treat “antifa” as a terror threat which *could* mean enhancements for people arrested at actions. We don’t know. Here’s the statement released today:
https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/attorney-general-william-p-barrs-statement-riots-and-domestic-terrorism
All I know is federal moves to treat “antifa” as domestic terrorists means a repression and criminalization of protest no matter your affiliation, from so-called “black identity extremists” to rank and file party members to black bloc. Remember how they did J20 protestors.
The cops were nearby, if they were eager to arrest him I think they would’ve done so. DO NOT make the state’s job easier, DO NOT facilitate a differentiation between “good” v “bad” protestor because all of this protest is functionally illegitimate to the state even if “peaceful.”
Our gesture towards abolition is unconditional. It’s not “defund police except for protestors making us look less than respectable,” it’s “defund police without caveat, full stop.” Kill the cop in your head, abolition is both intra/interpersonal AND relationship to structure!!!!!
