#HigherEd leaders making statements: please call out the vast inequities facing BLACK STUDENTS in particular. Don't just call it students of color. Read on...
Of course the system is stacked against students of color & low-income. But our system (and K12) is NOT serving Black students in the same way that it is not serving these other groups, with the exception of our Indigenous populations.
At @ACEducation we have been publishing ed outcomes by race. (See http://equityinhighered.org ) Gains by Blacks are overshadowed by outcomes that reflect systemic/structural barriers. This is NOT about the students, it is about our INSTITUTIONS and our SOCIETY.
Blacks are least likely to enroll in college. When they go, they are twice as likely to enroll in for-profit schools than students overall. NO MATTER income, Black students are least likely to enroll in selective schools w/many resources.
Blacks are least likely to study lucrative #STEM fields. They have lowest completion rates, highest dropout rates across ALL sectors of higher ed. More Black students borrow $ for college than any other group, and they borrow MORE, regardless of income. The #s are appalling.
In labor market, Blacks earn less than others w/same degree level. These stats repeat in K12, employment, STEM, etc. Let me say it again: This is not about them, it is about US. It is about our inability to see race, to take easy over hard, and 2 blame communities
instead of history and present-day policies that work against Black communities at every turn. #HigherEd, look in the mirror. Set an example. Start a movement. #EquityMatters
