[Thread] Some necessary (although insufficient) policing reforms needed now. 1) A national database of all those who have been killed by law enforcement: Racially motivated police officers are repeatedly targeting, brutalizing, and attacking Black and brown people nationwide. 1/
According to the FBI, local police kill Black people about two times per week. Other estimates say at least once per day. PDs are not required to report these killings to federal agencies. The scale, circumstances, and disciplinary outcome of police violence is largely unknown.
A national database on police stops, excessive use of force, and killings will allow federal and local officials to identify patterns of misconduct, hold individual officers and departments accountable, and address policies that incentivize police brutality.
2) Defund and end militarized policing: The federal government must immediately stop the transfer of military equipment to local law enforcement. There are an estimated 45,000 SWAT raids every year. This violent, paramilitary raid is happening in about 124 homes every day.
3) Fire, arrest, and prosecute killer cops! Strong and enforceable bans on police brutality and discriminatory policing based on race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, age, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, immigration status, disability, & housing.
We need to make sure that the tragedies stop. Greater community control over police, including their budgets, funding, policies, and practices is also what’s needed. #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd #ICantBreathe #JusticiaParaFloyd *End of thread*
