Been doing much more important things than talk about Taylor Swift lately, but: my Black Swiftie Group Chat has been suffering for days now because of what’s going on outside but also many microagressions and improper conduct within the fandom. If you’re a white Swiftie please:
1) Stop deciding for Black people what level of activism is or isn’t enough from Taylor. It’s been really upsetting for me to see lots of white fans act like a gatekeeper when actual Black fans have been discussing conduct for years. We don’t need performative activism from her.
Also, I won’t speak for my friends but I personally am fine with what she has done. She directly called out white supremacy and @-ed the worst instigator, we know she’s donating (she always does when she speaks up), and she’s NOT prioritizing/centering her voice over others.
2) Maybe keep your mouth shut if the only time you care about political issues is when you can play woke by tying a white celebrity to it! This isn’t about Taylor, so stop centering her for any reason in your supposed activism!
3) Consider the fact that Taylor’s presence at a protest would DISTRACT FROM THE CAUSE and potentially endanger her and others, especially fans. You shouldn’t want a selfie with a pop star at a protest. Halsey flat out told people not to approach her with requests like that.
4) Listen to actual Black fans about what they want from you or Taylor. Half of my group chat has decided to take a social media break because of everything that’s gone on. We shouldn’t have to leave our safe space at a time like this. It’s not fair to treat us this way.
Also, because it’s happened before when I speak about Taylor on Twitter, if you want to screencap this to post on tumblr (because this is definitely happening there too) I’m “morethanreputation” if you want to tag me. I don’t have time/energy to log in and rephrase there myself.
