Ok #HR. Tonight, you might be feeling all sorts of anxiety about going into work tomorrow. It was a tough weekend. For many of our black friends, partners & colleagues it has been much tougher & has been tough forever... THREAD
You can NOT say nothing. You can NOT do nothing. It is NOT business as usual tomorrow. Many of your employees are hurting. Saying nothing makes everything worse. Way, way worse. So what should we do?
Empathy & compassion is where you start. LISTEN to your people. Express your feelings about what happened this past week & express understanding why people may be angry, rattled, hurt. Be vulnerable.
Prepare some talking & action points for managers about listening, giving people some time/space, trust & the org’s commitment (if true) to doing the right thing.
Then, we gotta do better. It’s hard work - trust me, it’s haaaard - to learn how to be antiracist. But we can do it. As someone way smarter than me said, “Make the hire. Cut the check.” You can push managers & your org to do these things. Use your influence.
Lean into this uncomfortableness. Lean in hard. We all are hurt when one of us is hurt. If you see the other, you don’t see the us.
