I've spent the last few days doing two things: listening and talking to my kids. They're 7 and 9, but even they get it. #BalckLivesMatter, #acab, and the protests and riots are the only way things will change. It's the only way things ever seem to change.
Anyway, outside of this thread, I'm gonna keep doing exactly that: listening and talking to my kids about what's going on, why it's happening, and that this isn't just a problem in the US. I'm also telling them they need to speak up when they witness stuff like racism.
The same goes for sexism, homophobia, transphobia, islamophobia, etc. Staying quiet and doing nothing is not acceptable.
My youngest asked if it was like when his friend was getting beat up at school, so instead of doing nothing out of fear he would get beat up too, or getting a teacher, he just attacked the other kid til he stopped.
Also tonight, I was talking to my youngest alone at one point. He was saying that he had no idea about all this stuff with racism and cops. My oldest, from upstairs: "That's white privilege!"
My oldest has also said that he hates cops and no one should care about buildings when people are being murdered without consequence.
Anyway, I am obviously very proud of my sons, but I am also proud of everyone participating in the protests, demonstrations, and riots against all of this fucking bullshit.
Simon, like I did in my youth, will absolutely be one of those people protesting. If there was a protest here, he'd want to go and I would take him.
Anyway, I hope all of you remain safe, while also hoping this whole racist system gets burned to the ground for good.
