Despite everything else going on, I can't let May 31 pass by without marking that it was 11 years today that a white Christian domestic terrorist named Scott Roeder entered a church in Kansas and shot abortion provider Dr. George Tiller in the head.
Before Scott Roeder became yet another "pro-life" murderer, he had a history of involvement with militia groups. He called himself a patriot, just like a lot of those today who are A-OK with folks getting murdered in America so long as it's the ~right~ folks.
Dr. Tiller was irreplaceable, period. But I know so many people who—like me—got super activated in the repro movement out of rage at his death. All over the country. Some of the best people I know. I can't imagine the movement without them. And can't imagine my life without them.
Not to be overly corny about the possibilities for building a better future out of a truly bleak present. For everyone who got in the movement after Dr. Tiller's death, I'm sure some fled too, to say nothing of the damage done to his family & his church community. Trauma is real.
But another thing that's real is this: outrage can be an *amazing* construction material. Take yours and build something with it. Each of us creates the future every single day. It is in all of our interests to put the fight for justice at its very foundation.
