State leaders have reiterated that people should stay home as the 8pm curfew begins. I have asked every leader at every level of government to control law enforcement use of force in our community. I understand this is imperative for our community to move forward.
There continue to be reports from community of threats including unmarked vehicles and flammable materials found in Minneapolis neighborhoods. Incident Command has shared the below who to call. All electeds I know are working around the clock to pass on information we receive.
At Friday's emergency Council meeting, my colleagues and I started an important conversation about next steps. Minneapolis has laid the groundwork for a significant shift in our approach to public safety. It is not impossible to imagine a radical change, it is imperative.
For years we have invested in community-based safety, and across our city we see how community members are working to keep each other safe. The current situation is not sustainable but there are many lessons to draw on that do not rely on armed law enforcement for safety.
It is clear to me that our attempts at incremental reform of policing have failed. We need deep, structural change. It is not only possible, it is imperative, and we have laid the groundwork for it.
All of the above changes are the result of demands lead by POCI leaders and community. All credit goes to our community for the changes that have happened so far. We must continue to center community voices, especially communities of color, in next steps for change.
