Tonight I am reporting from Omaha, Nebraska for the third night of protests against police brutality. There have been multiple actions staged/planned across the city, and a curfew is in place for 8pm tonight.
I stopped by a modest protest at 72nd and Dodge St. - about 60 protestors had gathered. The general mood was one of calm defiance. I asked one protestor what he thought of tonights curfew - his message was one of defiance of what he called "unjust ordinances"
Video incoming later tonight - cell service is spotty.
A few photos as I was driving up - "special" busses, the boarded up Target that was vandalized the other night, and a few of the crowd on the corner
Another action has been ongoing at the Malcolm X Museum in North Omaha, one that the chief of Omaha Police singled out as the most important protest in the city - and one he wanted to be respectful of. That action is planned to be over at 7:30.
Once again if local folks have any tips or information as the night progresses, they can DM me here or get in touch via Signal.
Reports from comrades: Douglas County Sheriff has deployed large riot vehicles to the downtown area, last seen 20 minutes ago.
Clarification: at least one (1), unsure if others.
Heading downtown to meet up with a crowd gathered near the site of #JamesScurlock's murder. James was shot by a local bar owner outside of the Hive Club on Harney St. during last night's protest. The community is understandably outraged by this violence.
As we're walking we can see plenty of graffiti downtown - "Fuck 12" "RIP George" - Plenty of damage to the courthouse and nearby buildings boarded up.
Heavy police presence already, crowd gathered here is at least 300
Chants of No Justice, No Peace from the gathered crowd
Some protestors are laying down face first on the pavement in front of the assembled riot squad in protest. Gotta be at least 150 cops here
Cell service sucks so photos and vid will be uploaded later.
Chants of #JamesScurlock's name among the assembled crowd. James's murder has been a source of total outrage throughout the city today.
30 minutes to curfew, and National Guard humvees are being positioned near the protest spot.
Some folks are choosing to leave early, but the vast majority seem ready to defy curfew. This area where they've gathered is fairly closed off - a good kettle spot for sure
Some folks are now standing right next to the police line, hands up
Folks still engaging in a sit-in, not sure they plan to leave
"Take off the armor! Why are you scared?" At the cops
"If they start shooting, lay down!" Things are tense as hell, 20 minutes to curfew
Folks have backed the cops up by laying down, moving, laying down again
Peaceful sit-in happening, which is the same that happened in Minneapolis last night. Cops there threw flashbangs into the sitting crowd. Hard not to anticipate that happening hete.
