I& #39;m seeing so many good pledges and resources circulating in support of #blacklivesmatter https://abs.twimg.com/hashflags... draggable="false" alt=""> that focus on what an individual can do to work against racism, at a personal and interpersonal level. It is vital for non-racialized people to commit to this; but it is not enough. 1/
To fight systemic racism, we must also fight racism in the institutions and systems we inhabit. I& #39;m looking at you health care. As leaders, change agents or shit disturbers health organizations, let& #39;s consider how we can change the system we work in. A few ideas: 2/
@BlackHealthCAN has articulated concrete steps to ensure #blacklivesmatter https://abs.twimg.com/hashflags... draggable="false" alt=""> in health care, including collecting race-based data; investing in health equity training at all levels; 3/
(cont& #39;d) Addressing racism and discrimination for clients and staff; and develop and implement Black Health and Black Mental Health Strategies. Full report here: https://bit.ly/3ciwbnC ">https://bit.ly/3ciwbnC&q... 4/
We can create health care organizations that respect all people and reflect our communities; including hiring and mentoring and promoting #peopleofcolour to positions of authority, 5/
And making sure these individuals are well supported by creating policies, incentives and internal supports to do so. Shout out to @CAMHNews and @SinaiHealth for making Canada& #39;s Top Diversity Employers& #39; list for 2020. 6/
For my #patientengagement peeps, many of whom are not racialized: let& #39;s learn as much as we can about health experiences of those experiencing discrimination, so those stories become part of what we carry with us every day as we work; 7/
Let& #39;s also seek out new partnerships with organizations serving and led by racialized people; let& #39;s go to the places people feel comfortable in, instead of expecting them to come to us; 8/
And let& #39;s proactively work to make the spaces we are responsible for convening as safe and inclusive as possible - here is a timely resource to do this well online: https://bit.ly/2MhWvUo ">https://bit.ly/2MhWvUo&q... 6/
Let& #39;s expand our agency and power beyond social media and the streets, to the places we spend a vast majority of our hours - together, we can build a health system that benefits everyone. End/
