The crowd at Silver and Harvard SE. Speakers starting now hundreds of people on this block almost everyone wearing a mask and many people with signs. @KOB4
Jim Harvey, the Director of the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice, said we’re working to end 400 years of institutional racism. Before he took the lectern he said tonight will be a peaceful demonstration.
“We’re sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
A theme among speakers: we are not praying for peace we are praying for a disruption of the system that allows for racism to continue.
Just now @MayorKeller arrived. He is scheduled to speak.
Two helicopters circling. I’m assuming one of them is @ABQPOLICE keeping an eye on things. Not one badge or squad car in-sight. That’s unusual from other vigils I’ve covered here.
Crowd sings Amazing Grace led by one of the speakers.
“I need you to vote. I need you to run for office, any office, every office.” Sonia Rankin, UNM School of Law.
In the middle of @MayorKeller speech a small group of people were chanting over him, “defund the police.” Tensions are rising, most people quietly listening/applauding along.
Here’s that group chanting over the Mayor. Most of them just left telling others to meet them at the other protest tonight 7pm on Central and University.
Protestors say a group of @ABQPOLICE officers have gathered a block down the street on Cornell. More people are arriving. @MayorKeller has left.
Largest mass gathering I’ve seen in quite sometime in NM. Speakers have been talking for an hour and half now. Another demonstration is set to start at 7pm.
Here’s the group of APD traffic cops hanging out down the block from the rally. I asked one officer if he’s aware of the scheduled protest at 7pm. He said he didn’t know, he’s just here to keep the peace and keep people safe.
Here is the group on University and Central. My photographer tells me they are now marching down Central. I am on the way there now.
Let’s not forget it’s Sunday, which means people are cruising Central. The group of protestors is headed toward a bunch of low riders and loud music with a lot of people hanging outside.
Police have Central closed at 2nd St.
Protestors marching downtown. About to meet the police on Central.
Police scrambling to clear Central. Hundreds marching toward downtown.
Head of the protestors telling people not to destruct property as they pause at 2nd st. before marching through downtown.
Police staying just ahead of protestors. Emotions are high. This car is controlling the pace making sure they don’t run into the cops who are working to clear Central.
People in this car yelling at people to stay behind them. Loud, emotional, but organized and peaceful for now.
The protestors have stopped at the roundabout. Organizers trying to keep people out of the street. They said this is the destination they were walking to.
Central and 8th at the roundabout. – at Robinson Park
A moment of silence for #GeorgeFloyd in #Albuquerque.
The lead car now heading back east on Central. 100s following them. Central now full of cars. Not sure if police knew they were going to turn around.
The @ABQPOLICE doing a remarkable job of clearing the streets for marchers and keeping their distance.
As nightfalls the group marches East on Central. I’ve seen one kid tagging/spray painting swear words on the wall, only destruction I’ve seen so far.
Caught up with the marchers on Central and Columbia. Considerably smaller now than it was downtown.
The marchers got separated and their is confusion about where people are congregating. Now the group is headed to Johnson field on UNM campus.
As far as I can tell there is no more centralized protest. There is a lot of small groups walking around with signs. There’s a lot of cars ripping around and honking horns, but things appear to be winding down.
My photographer Aaron Johnson and I made it back the station. Proud of him for literally running up and down Central tonight. I’m also proud of a vast majority of protestors remaining peaceful tonight.
