THREAD We cannot stay silent on things that actually matter. Don’t ignore something just because it makes you uncomfortable. These two sentences have really been playing on my mind these last few days. I’ve been vocal on Insta but I think it’s time to do it on Twitter too
What happened with George Floyd was an absolute atrocity. Murder, in daylight and in front of so many witnesses. All down to racism and an ‘alleged’ crime and just because a white man can, with no consequences. If you can’t see the privilege, you’re part of the problem.
If society is essentially a ‘contract’ between humans which we need to uphold and follow, what then when the people at the top who are meant to be the role model for this ‘contract’ (namely police officers) can break it and confidently murder in daylight?
Black people have been following this ‘contract’ and for decades now, the same treatment has never been reciprocated. Time and time again, innocent black lives are lost due to racism, with the murderers walking away with no serious consequences.
Murder after murder, lives lost, families left behind with no mother, father, brother, sister etc, so what else do you expect then societal uproar, protests, pressure on govt? Enough is enough! #blacklivesmatter
If we continue to stay silent on these matters because it makes us uncomfortable and if we don’t challenge people’s mentalities, opinions, actions regarding black people then we will always be stuck in this vicious cycle.
It’s especially important to educate ourselves, learn and read around, discuss with our families and friends regarding #blacklivesmatter , racism in and around the world and looking back at history.
Racism is everywhere. Just because I’m in the UK, I shouldn’t think I’m better off because this is only happening in America. If you take some time out to research the racism in the UK, we are just as worse!! #blacklivesmatter
Stephen Lawrence, Rickey Bishop, Faruk Ali, Mark Duggan, Belly Mujinga. Research these names and the backstory of how they lost their lives and it all boils down to the same reason - racism! #blacklivesmatter
We need to consistently remind ourselves that we live in a really racist world. This will not change any time soon. It’s our job to keep actively speaking out against the injustices, murders and to not stay silent. #blacklivesmatter
Moreover, South Asians also need to do better. There is anti blackness within our community which we must challenged. We all know how much skin tones are discussed in families and how white and fair skin is preferred. This thought pattern needs to be disrupted and destroyed.
This whole mentality of South Asians preferring fair skin over dark skin is so engrained within our culture. We need to speak up against colourism and the desire for light skin. Everyone should be treated the same, irrespective of our skin tones.
I’m going to end this thread by saying 2 things. 1. It’s not just the job of black people to speak up against all forms of racism. What happened with George Floyd and countless others should be affecting us all as innocent lives are being lost. We should not stay silent.
2. May Allah destroy racism in all forms and may He grant justice to all the black people around the world and allow them to live peacefully without fear and violence. #blacklivesmatter
