Here's data about force used by the MET police in 2017- 18. There is a disproportionate amount of force used on black people? More than a third was on black people. Check the percentage of the population of black people in the UK. Still alleged police brutality? #blacklivesmatter
An 2015 report by Inquest showed 1500 deaths in police custody since 1990. Further research by the Institute of Race Relations found over 500 of these were black and Asian people. Remember the bar chart showing ethnicity proportions in the UK? Do the math. #theukisnotinnocent
Sean Rigg died of a cardiac arrest in 2008 after 5 police officers used excessive restraint on him. A 2012 inquest ruled the restraint and force as unnecessary and a death factor. #theukisnotinnocent #blacklivesmatter
Kingsley Burrell died after being brutally restrained by police in 2011. The officers lied about having covered his face whilst he in handcuffs and leg restraints. A 2015 inquest found that the restraint resulted in his death. #theukisnotinnocent
Sarah Reed was a victim of police brutality in 2012. There’s a CCTV evidence of this, if you need that as proof that police brutality in the UK is not “alleged”. She then died in her cell in 2014. She was victim to MULTIPLE failures by authorities.
Sheku Bayoh died of a cardiac arrest as a result of police brutality (that you say is just "alleged"). There’s a BBC Disclosure investigation on this – I suggest you watch it. #theukisnotinnocent #blacklivesmatter
All of this evidence without Mark Duggan being mentioned yet. He was shot and murdered by the police in 2011. To add, the picture most widely used by the press was intentionally cropped to make him look worse. #theukisnotinnocent #blacklivesmatter
So guess what... police brutality exists in the UK! So what you must mean by "alleged", is that the body count in the UK isn't high enough to warrant calling it out for what it is. Or you want a new death in the UK as proof? #theukisnotinnocent #blacklivesmatter
Police brutality doesn't even need to end in deaths to be deemed police brutality. The violence alone is unjustifiable from the police meant to protect and serve us. #theukisnotinnocent #blacklivesmatter
Social psychology research on the power of authority & compliance means the true scale of it is likely much higher. Those who experience police brutality are unlikely to report it... to the police. Milgram experiment- old but boy is it gold! #blacklivesmatter #theukisnotinnocent
Therefore @EveningStandard I think you should apologise for the use of "alleged" when mentioning police brutality in the UK, then amend it. The UK does a superb job of erasing the breadth and depth of experiences of black people in the UK. Don't add to that. #theukisnotinnocent
