It’s been articulated beautifully by many people the terrible mental health burden being felt by the black community right now. We also need to address the systematic barriers to treatment many black people also face. For those needing services in the north philly area 1/n
I’d like to recommend the La Salle clinic in Germantown. Although I can’t speak on the experiences of black people who’ve received services there, I recommend this clinic for three reasons. 1) They use a sliding scale for fees, meaning your cost is based on your income, and 2/n
You can pay as low as a few dollars per session 2) their clinicians receive specialized trainings to treat people of different races and to be sensitive of disparities between themselves and their clients 3) this is a community clinic which exists to meet 3/n
the needs of the people in the area who are majority black. If anyone has any other clinics, drop them in this thread! Black community, we hear you and your pain and recognize that you are going through collective trauma. Your lives matter. Your mental health matters. 4/4
Extra tweet and most importantly (!!) they are currently doing teletherapy! So you can receive services as long as you have access to a phone.
Extra extra tweet for full disclosure, my partner is a student clinician at this clinic, but he does not get paid to work there so we do not financially gain with anyone going to this clinic. That is also how I know the importance placed on race education and acknowledging 1/2
the differences between yourself and your client, and how to best address your client's needs. Its integrated into many parts of their education. This is one of the many barriers to quality mental health treatment for black people, as it can damage the therapeutic alliance. 2/2
