Rojava, of course, is an authoritarian single-party statelet, financed thru oil sales and surviving by the grace of the US airforce. It harasses and persecutes local dissidents, incl other Kurdish parties, and only looks good next to the tyranny and barbarism of its competitors.
Not denying that there's good things happening. It's certainly the least bad order existing in Syria today, and most residents live freer lives now than they have under previous regimes. But to idolize and advocate it as a model outside the war-ravaged conditions of Syria is wild
There's great research out there that goes beyond the fan fiction. A lot of people have tried to make meaningful improvements but the system is reticent. Unfortunately, critical reporting tends to earn people online harassment and eventually restrictions on access on the ground.
I wasn't even intending to wade into that cesspool of a debate tonight. I'm mostly just irritated at the casual use of foreign peoples for political props, positive or negative.
And, yes, people have done study visits to all sorts of bad places coming away glowing - there's a huge literature. PYD authoritarianism is a matter of record and a staple (and sore) discussion point for diplomats tasked with dealing with the AA.
