When I’ve been pulled over by the police for a traffic violation—I’ve only ever worried about if I’ll get a ticket or not, how much it will cost & the inconvenience of traffic court.

I’ve never worried about whether or not I‘ll live or die.

But I’m white.

When I’ve gone to a grocery store (or any store) and written a check, or paid with cash or credit, I’ve never worried about a store employee calling the police to claim I was committing forgery.

But I’m white.

When I’ve gone out for a jog or explored a house being built, I’ve never worried if anyone will hunt me down to kill me— then try to falsely claim theft to justify murder after video evidence surfaced 2 months later.

But I’m white.

I’ve never feared the police busting through my front door, shooting me, later claiming a case of mistaken identity, or the wrong house.

—or shooting me through my window or coming into my home shooting to kill me in my bed while I’ve slept.

But I’m white.

When I’ve visited, stayed with relatives & decided to go out for some air, walk to a store, maybe grab some skittles, I’ve never worried about being accused that my candy was a gun— and never feared being shot on my way back to their place.

But I’m white.

When I’ve been on a cell phone in my own backyard, or my parents or grandparents backyards, I’ve never worried about whether or not I’ll be supposedly “mistaken” for someone holding a gun and get shot dead.

But I’m white.

When I ran over a nail & blew out a tire on a major CA freeway, I never feared if a police officer would arrest me or shoot me.

I had several good people stop & ask if I needed help while I changed my tire, incl a LEO— He told me to have a good rest of my day.

But I’m white.

I’ve been in a few auto accidents, one rather serious— injured & I needed help. Never once did I fear flagging down someone, have fear approaching someone to ask for help, and never a fear of being shot for asking a stranger for help.

But I’m white.

I’ve been in a Walmart, picked up a box holding a “toy” BB gun. Never once did anyone falsely claim I was pointing a gun at other shoppers & call 911. Never once have I feared a police officer shooting me in a store while I was shopping.

But I’m white.

I played cops and robbers as a kid all the time. We had cap guns. Never once did I worry about the police showing up to the park I was playing at and shooting me in 1 second. My parents didn’t worry about it either. It wasn’t even a thought.

But I’m white.

When I’ve gone to picnics in a park, or gone to a park & asked someone to put their dog on a leash— this often happens when I hike—I’ve never worried if someone will claim I’m threatening them & call the police. They almost always apologize.

But I’m white.
